Red Sand Dunes Mui Ne

Mui Ne is a dramatic coastal strip located in Binh Thuan Province, roughly a 3.5 to 4-hour drive from Ho Chi Minh City. What was once a collection of quiet, isolated fishing villages has evolved into a world-famous coastal destination.

Geographically unique, Mui Ne sits in a distinct microclimate that experiences the lowest annual rainfall in Vietnam, creating a striking landscape where massive, Sahara-like sand dunes plunge directly down toward the blue waters of the East Sea.

The Iconic Desert Landscapes

  1. The White Sand Dunes (Bàu Trắng)

Located about 25 kilometers north of the main resort strip, this is Mui Ne’s most spectacular geological marvel. These towering, snow-white silica dunes stretch across a vast landscape, earning them the nickname “The Sahara of Vietnam.”

  • The Oasis Contrast: Nestled right at the base of these dry, windswept dunes lies Bàu Sen (Lotus Lake), a natural freshwater lake blanketed in wild lotus blossoms during the summer months, creating an incredible visual contrast between barren desert and lush oasis.
  • Top Experience: Most visitors arrive here in the dark to catch a breathtaking sunrise over the dunes. You can rent ATVs (Quad bikes) or open-top 4×4 jeeps to race up the steep, shifting sandy peaks.
  1. 2. The Red Sand Dunes (Đồi Cát Bay)

Situated closer to the main town area, these dunes feature a rich, fiery reddish-orange sand that glows intensely under the late afternoon sun.

  • Top Experience: This is the ultimate spot for sunset viewing. Local children gather around the entrance to rent out simple plastic sleds, allowing you to sand-board down the steep slopes.

 Coastal and Cultural Hotspots

  1. The Fairy Stream (Suối Tiên)

The Fairy Stream is a surreal, slow-flowing ankle-deep creek that winds its way through a mini-canyon of striking rock formations.

  • The Landscape: On one side of the stream, you are flanked by dense green jungle and coconut palms; on the other, you walk past towering, sculpted walls of dramatic red and white clay columns formed by years of wind and rain erosion.
  • Top Experience: Visitors take off their shoes at the entrance and walk barefoot through the soft, sandy bed of the cool water all the way to a small hidden waterfall at the end.
  1. Mui Ne Fishing Village & Harbor

For a glimpse into the authentic, centuries-old maritime heart of the region, visit the scenic overlook of the Mui Ne harbor early in the morning.

  • The Sight: The bay is packed with hundreds of colorful traditional wooden fishing boats and distinct, circular woven bamboo coracles (Thuyền Thúng).
  • The Action: As the sun rises, fishermen haul their overnight catches onto the beach, where a bustling, chaotic open-air seafood market immediately forms on the sand. It is a fantastic spot for raw documentary photography.
  1. Poshanu Cham Towers

Perched on Ong Hoang Hill overlooking Phan Thiet city on the way to Mui Ne, this historic complex dates back to the late 8th century during the ancient Kingdom of Champa. Built using advanced, mortarless red-brick engineering, these towers are dedicated to Lord Shiva and represent some of the oldest architectural ruins of the Cham civilization in southern Vietnam.
