Phu Quoc Island
Phu Quoc Island has evolved into a fascinating destination of contrasts. It splits quite cleanly into three main zones: the mega-entertainment complexes of the North, the bustling local culture of the center, and the postcard-perfect beaches and island-hopping of the South.
Here is a breakdown of the absolute “hot spots” you should look out for, categorized by geographic area to help you organize a smooth route.
- The North: Mega-Resorts & Entertainment
The northern part of the island is heavily dominated by large-scale developments, making it a fantastic playground for families, couples, and photography lovers looking for curated experiences.
- Grand World Phu Quoc: Marketed as “the city that never sleeps,” this massive, colorful complex is modeled after Venice. You can actually take a gondola ride down a replica Venetian canal. The area is a bit quiet during the heat of the day, but it completely comes alive at night with vibrant neon lights, food stalls, and a massive, free multimedia laser and water show.
- Vinpearl Safari & VinWonders: Vinpearl Safari is Vietnam’s first open-concept wildlife park where you can take a protected bus ride directly through animal enclosures and even dine next to giraffes. Right next door is VinWonders, a massive theme park often described as Vietnam’s Disneyland, complete with an incredible giant turtle-shaped aquarium, water park, and thrill rides.
- Starfish Beach (Rach Vem): Located on the secluded northern coast, this area features calm, shallow waters. During the right season (typically November to April), the shallow shores are dotted with bright red starfish.
- 2. The Center (Duong Dong & Surrounds): Local Vibe & Nightlife
If you want to feel the authentic pulse of the island, taste local flavors, and enjoy casual beach bars, the central area around the main town of Duong Dong is the place to be.
- Phu Quoc Night Market: Located right in the heart of Duong Dong, this bustling market is an absolute must-visit for dinner. It is a paradise for street food lovers—packed with stalls selling rolled ice cream, coconut cakes, and live seafood tanks where you can pick your catch and have it grilled on the spot.
- Long Beach (Bai Truong): Stretching over 20 kilometers along the western coast, this is the center of the island’s resort and nightlife action. Because it faces west, it offers the best, unobstructed sunset views on the island.
- OCSEN Beach Bar & Club: A legendary central hot spot on Long Beach. It is famous for its iconic orange bean bags spread across the sand, chilled music, and a nightly fire dancing show right at the water’s edge.
- The South: Postcard Beaches & Island Hopping
The southern tip of Phu Quoc is where you will find the most breathtaking natural coastal beauty, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and major modern landmarks.
- Hon Thom Cable Car & Sunset Town: Sunset Town is a massive, visually stunning resort town completely modeled after the Italian Amalfi Coast, featuring Mediterranean architecture, artificial ruins, and the famous Kiss Bridge. From here, you board the Hon Thom Cable Car—one of the longest oversea cable cars in the world. The 15-minute ride offers spectacular 360-degree views of the fishing boats and islands below, dropping you off at the Aquatopia Water Park on Pineapple Island.
- Sao Beach & Khem Beach: These are the island’s crown jewel beaches. Sao Beach is famous for its powdery, cream-colored sand and calm, shallow turquoise waters framed by swaying palms. Nearby Khem Beach is equally stunning and hosts some of the island’s most luxurious international five-star resorts.
- An Thoi Archipelago (Island Hopping): A cluster of 15 small, pristine islets off the southern tip (including popular spots like Hon May Rut, Hon Gam Ghi, and Hon Mong Tay). Taking a speed boat or catamaran tour out here is the absolute best way to experience vibrant coral reef snorkeling, sea walking, and untouched island beaches.
- Cultural & Culinary Quick Stops
While exploring between the north and south, a few quick stops offer a deeper look into the island’s heritage:
- Ho Quoc Pagoda: A beautiful, serene Buddhist temple built on a hillside. It boasts a brilliant feng shui location with sweeping views of the blue ocean directly in front and lush mountains behind.
- Local Pepper Farms & Fish Sauce Factories: Phu Quoc is world-renowned for its organic black pepper and premium, traditional fish sauce. Many farms and factories allow quick, fascinating walk-through tours where you can sample different pepper blends and see the massive wooden vats used for fermenting the fish sauce.
