Established in 1372, this historic Theravada Buddhist sanctuary is not just a place of daily worship; it is the physical birthplace of the city itself and holds the very origin story of how Phnom Penh got its name.

Standing at a modest 27 meters above the surrounding landscape, the temple sits inside a verdant, circular park that acts as a peaceful, shaded oasis amidst the bustling energy of the modern capital.

The Origin Legend: Lady Penh and the Floating Koki Tree

The history of Wat Phnom is inextricably tied to a wealthy local widow named Daun Penh (Grandmother Penh). According to centuries old Cambodian folklore, the story began during a period of heavy flooding along the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers:

Lady Penh noticed a large, hollow koki (ironwood) tree floating down the swollen river and snagged it near her riverbank home.

Inside the hollow trunk of the tree, she discovered a treasure: four bronze statues of the Buddha and a single stone statue of the Hindu deity Vishnu.

Recognizing this as a divine omen, Lady Penh gathered her neighbors and instructed them to build an artificial earthen hill (phnom) next to her house to elevate the sacred objects above future floodwaters.

She constructed a small wooden shrine at the top of the hill to house the statues. The surrounding settlement grew rapidly around this sacred mound, and the area came to be known as Phnom Daun Penh which eventually shortened over time to become Phnom Penh.

What Visitors See on the Grounds

Visiting Wat Phnom is a multi-layered spiritual experience, blending classic Buddhist structures, Chinese Taoist shrines, and nods to Cambodia’s royal history.

The Eastern Grand Staircase

The primary approach to the temple is a grand staircase flanked by beautifully sculpted, multi-headed stone Nagas (mythical serpent guardians) and sitting lions. As you climb up through the shaded canopy, the city sounds gradually fade away into the smell of burning incense and the sound of chiming bells.

The Central Vihara (Sanctuary)

At the peak of the hill sits the main sanctuary hall, which has been rebuilt several times over the centuries (most recently in 1926). Inside, the walls and high ceilings are completely covered in vibrant, colorful murals depicting scenes from the Reamker (the Cambodian version of the epic Ramayana) and the life stories of the Buddha. A large, seated bronze Buddha dominates the central altar.

The Great White Stupa

Towering directly behind the main sanctuary is an enormous, bell-shaped white stone stupa. This monumental structure houses the cremated ashes of King Ponhea Yat, the ruler who officially moved the capital of the Khmer Empire away from Angkor to Phnom Penh in the early 15th century.

The Shrine of Lady Penh

Tucked between the main sanctuary and the stupa is a small, heavily visited pavilion dedicated entirely to Daun Penh herself. Local worshippers frequently visit this shrine to offer prayers, flowers, and fruit to her spirit, requesting good fortune, successful business ventures, or health for their families.

5. Preah Chau Shrine

Located on the northern slope of the hill, this colorful shrine is highly revered by the local Chinese-Cambodian community. It features statues of Taoist deities and traditional Chinese guardians, illustrating the peaceful harmony and blending of diverse cultural traditions in the city.

A Note on Local Experiences: At the southern base of the hill, you will find a massive, manicured grass clock built directly into the hillside, which has become a popular photo spot. While exploring the park, keep an eye out for the local wildlife the trees are home to a lively community of playful macaques, though it’s best to admire them from a distance and keep a secure grip on your bags or snacks!

[143
post-789","custom_destination","type-custom_destination","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","province-wat-phnom","entry

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
