They immediately declared “Year Zero” an attempt to completely erase modern society, history, and culture to reset Cambodia into a completely isolated, agrarian (farming) utopia.

Cities were forcibly emptied in a matter of days. Millions of urban citizens were marched into the countryside to work up to 16 hours a day in agricultural labor collectives. Money was abolished, schools and temples were closed, private property was confiscated, and even the traditional family structure was broken apart in favor of total devotion to the Angkar (the secretive ruling organization).

Anyone who did not fit this radical peasant ideal became a target for execution:

The Educated: Teachers, doctors, lawyers, engineers, and students. Even wearing glasses or speaking a foreign language was considered proof of being an “intellectual” and a threat to the regime.

The Old Administration: Anyone associated with the previous government or military.

Ethnic and Religious Minorities: Including Cham Muslims, ethnic Vietnamese, ethnic Chinese, and Buddhist monks.

Internal “Traitors”: Over time, paranoid purges within the Khmer Rouge’s own ranks saw thousands of loyal soldiers accused of spying and sent to the graves.

Choeung Ek: The Processing of Death

Before it became a symbol of tragedy, Choeung Ek was a peaceful longan orchard and a Chinese graveyard. Under the Khmer Rouge, it became the final destination for prisoners processed through the notorious S-21 Security Prison (Tuol Sleng), a former high school in the center of Phnom Penh converted into a brutal interrogation and torture facility.

Because executions were carefully hidden from the public, prisoners were transported to Choeung Ek by truck under the cover of night. The mechanics of the site reveal the chillingly calculated nature of the regime:

Covering the Noise: To drown out the cries of the victims and prevent nearby villagers from realizing what was happening, guards hung heavy loudspeakers from the trees. They blasted revolutionary music and the loud, rhythmic thumping of diesel generators across the fields.

The Execution Methods: Because ammunition was expensive and precious to the military, the Khmer Rouge rarely used bullets to carry out executions. Instead, prisoners were ordered to kneel at the edge of mass graves, where guards used heavy farm tools, iron ox-cart axles, wooden clubs, hoes, and the sharp, serrated edges of sugar palm fronds to deliver fatal blows.

The Killing Tree (Chankiri Tree): One of the most heartbreaking locations within Choeung Ek is a large tree standing next to a mass grave. Guards would hold infants and young children by their legs and beat them against the trunk before casting them into the pit alongside their parents, driven by Pol Pot’s brutal maxim: “To destroy grass, you must dig up its roots.”

The Site Today: A Place of Remembrance

Following the fall of the regime in January 1979 when Vietnamese forces entered Phnom Penh, Choeung Ek was uncovered. Exhumations in 1980 revealed 129 mass graves, from which the remains of nearly 9,000 victims were carefully recovered. To preserve the historical authenticity and respect the spirits of the dead, 43 of these communal graves have been left completely undisturbed.

Today, walking through Choeung Ek is a quiet, profoundly somber experience. Visitors are guided by an exceptional audio tour that features historical explanations alongside the deeply moving personal survival stories of everyday Cambodians.

What You See on the Grounds

The Memorial Stupa: Built in 1988, this classic Buddhist monument stands at the heart of the site. Behind its clear acrylic glass panels, more than 5,000 human skulls are resting, arranged carefully by age and biological sex. Many show clear, fractures from the blunt force trauma used during the executions.

The Scattered Fabric and Bones: Because the soil shifts over time especially during the heavy tropical monsoon rains fragments of clothing, teeth, and bone shards naturally work their way to the surface of the paths. Dedicated caretakers walk the grounds regularly to gather these fragments and place them in glass collection boxes along the route.

A Note on Visitor Etiquette: If you visit Choeung Ek, it is treated as a highly sacred memorial ground. Visitors are requested to dress respectfully (shoulders and knees fully covered), walk quietly along the designated paths, and completely refrain from smoking, drinking, or eating while on the grounds.

[140
post-803","custom_destination","type-custom_destination","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","province-the-killing-field","entry

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
